About Stephen O'Malley

Stephen O'Malley is a guitarist, producer, visual artist and composer who has conceptualized and participated in numerous drone and experimental music groups for over two decades – SUNN O))), KTL, and Khanate being among his best-known creations. Wildly prolific, O'Malley's oeuvre is defined by its remarkable breadth, complexity and multidisciplinary interests, collaborations with a wide range of experimental artists, including Scott Walker, Kali Malone, Alvin Lucier, choreographer Gisèle Vienne, the authors Dennis Cooper and Alan Moore, Peter Rehberg, Fujiko Nakaya, Jim Jarmusch, Johan Johansson, and many others. His live performances feature a reverberating fog of electric guitar minimalism – sorcery that challenges boundaries of space and time.

O'Malley joins Dais Records for Avaeken, two sides of immense, immersive, self-annihilating music. The record preserves site-specific work: O'Malley installed Avaeken as part of Wish You Were Here, the exhibition by renowned American artist Banks Violette, underscoring the tension between presence and absence, life and loss. Emerging as an LP, the album presents power and phenomena: low-frequency vibrations, deep oscillations, and phase cancellations that translate as innately effective in any environment. Violette's visual expression — the impossibility of locating yourself within the loss of a friend and the broader decay of culture — now fills the LP sleeve and feels inextricable from O'Malley’s sound, both still without resolution.
