Welcome to Dais Records!
Dais was conceived during a series of conversations between two old friends, Ryan Martin and Gibby Miller, on a summer afternoon in 2007. The desire to release records was something that had been boiling within each of us for a long while and we both felt strongly that there was a lot of music that we wanted to hunt down and re-release to vinyl, as well as some incredible new artists that we wanted to help bring to light. Following in the footsteps of archivists such as Alan Lomax and Harry Smith, our goal will always be to release unheard “lost” recordings and to re-release out-of-print music that fits our aesthetic, while always bringing new artists to the forefront.
The name Dais (pronounced day-iss) is a term used to describe a raised platform, usually reserved for something important (an altar, a kings throne, a podium or plinth, etc) and is symbolic of a higher standard of making sure important recordings are no longer ignored. The name was something that simply clicked between us and made sense.
Our logo is many Animals. It is a Coyote, a Fox, a Raccoon or a Wolf, depending on who you are and how you feel. It is the face of Nature, and in that it is representative of many feelings and desires. The image of the four Animals with tongues entwined is a symbol of Process, collaboration, mysticism, and above all else, eternal life.
Dais is a label founded on friendship and trust. Every release represents that strong bond of friendship. We are determined, against all odds, to go forth in releasing what we feel is music that deserves to be heard. What needs to be heard. What should never be ignored.
